Philip Andre Rourke Jr.
And Mickey Rourke, the swarthy actor whose personal life has been more addled by demons than the characters he portrays, is up for best actor for his role in "The Wrestler. He's much more convincing, in fact, than he was in the last Rourke film I saw — an Italian ditty called "Francesco.
In one scene, Francis rushes jaybird naked from a church, plunges into a snow bank and begins making tiny snowmen. I think it's supposed to show how much Francis longed to have a family.
Mickey rourke's desperate truths
I can actually imagine Mickey Rourke running naked from a church and building snowmen. In fact, I can imagine it being a cherished Mickey Rourke Christmas tradition. In the end, both "Francesco" and "The Last Temptation of Christ" point up the problems Hollywood has when it makes religious films.
The people who make them are more interested in "art" than "heart. They're too determined to "create" instead of "translate. To make a true spiritual film, those involved must be willing to "get out of the way" and let something larger than themselves run the show.

But egos are enormous in Tinsel Town. Nobody is willing to do that. And it often takes only 30 seconds of a film to see that cleverness, stylishness and ego are more important than letting something transcendent shine through. Truly spiritual artists, actors and writers long to become transparent. They long to disappear and let heaven do all the talking.
That doesn't happen in self-conscious, self-important films like "Francesco" and "The Last Temptation of Christ.
